Pixels actor Josh Gad has hatched a new weight-loss comedy over at Paramount Pictures. Entitled Heavy Duty, the concept is said to be based on Gad’s own idea, with a screenplay now in the works from Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit (1600 Penn, Super Fun Night).
Revolving around the story of Josh Gad’s Average Joe, Heavy Duty has our rotund character enroll for a dramatic weight scheme, believing that shedding a few pounds will help him lead a much more exciting and extraordinary life. But Gad’s protagonist soon finds that he’s out of his depth when he’s left facing an unexpected test alongside his fellow, plump underachievers.
Gaining the backing of Disruption Entertainment, Gad’s feature will be produced by Mary Parent and Cale Boyter on behalf of the company, while Drew Pearce (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Iron Man 3) is attached to executive produce. No word yet of a director to take the reins or the cast that will join Gad’s passion project, though expect to hear more news sooner rather than later as production picks up speed.
Meanwhile, looking at the actor’s calling card, next on the list is Sony’s high-profile animation Angry Birds. It’s due to take flight on May 20, before Josh Gad swaps avians for princesses in time for Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast dancing into theaters on March 17, 2017. Other upcoming roles include Will Ferrell’s Russ & Roger and intriguing indie drama Marshall, which will have him star opposite the Black Panther to be, Chadwick Boseman.
Heavy Duty is still simmering in the early stages of development, but does Gad’s passion project pique your interest?
